Reproducing pressure environments for depths of up to 10,000 m
The pressure in the sea (water pressure) increases by one atmosphere for every 10 meters of water depth. At a depth of 1,000 meters, the pressure is approximately 101 atmospheres. At 4,000 meters, it is approximately 401 atmospheres. Roughly 650kg of force are exerted by each square meter of water.
This pressure testing facility can accurately reproduce deep sea conditions. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) tested the pressure gauge for its Shinkai 6500 deep submergence research vehicle here.
